I’ve always held a special spot in my heart for the music of Tenth Avenue North. They’ve never done much of a themed album before, simply recording songs that are important to them, and in turn, important to us as their fans.

That has changed. With Cathedrals, Mike Donehey and his fellow band members have followed in the footsteps of David Crowder Band’s final project, Give Us Rest or (A Requiem Mass in C [The Happiest of All Keys]) with an old-style church album, complete with an interlude in Latin sung by Audrey Assad. (Obviously, Give Us Rest cannot be compared to. Cathedrals simply gives the same vibes on a lesser scale, as it is eleven tracks compared to DCB’s twenty-three.)

My favorite tracks from this album are: “Cathedrals”, “The Spark”, and “Closer”.

The album is still very much a contemporary, radio-friendly album, as all previous releases by Tenth Avenue North have been. I feel as though “Cathedrals” may have been a better first single from the album, because, though “No Man Is an Island” is a great song, I feel as though it may have not been the best representative of the road Tenth Avenue North takes the listener on in the experience of Cathedrals as a whole.

This a great album, and a wonderful addition to the albums Tenth Avenue North has already released.
