I realized, in looking back over this first full year (!) of SWW, that basically every time I review an album, I always say the same thing: “I was really excited for (insert album name here).” Guess what? I was really excited for The Almost’s new album, Fear Inside Our Bones. Shocker!
In all seriousness, though, this, aside from Fading West‘s release later this year, was one of my most anticipated albums of 2013, whether the article actually said so or not. I love The Almost, and was waiting for their newest project, even though I wasn’t totally sure whether it would actually be released. But! Here it is!
When I listened to the first single, “Ghost,” I started becoming a bit anxious about this album. It’s a great song, but it was such a different direction for them that I wasn’t sure whether this would ruin The Almost for me or not. Nevertheless, Aaron and the guys pulled through, and brought us Fear Inside Our Bones.
Well, time passed and I grew to love “Ghost,” and then the next single “I’m Down” released. The cycle started again. I doubted, yes, doubted, the end result. Finally, a few weeks later, another song, the title track, “Fear Inside Our Bones,” was leaked and I felt at peace with the latest twist in The Almost’s musical road.
The album is stellar, even though I expected nothing less. While taking its own direction, it sounds more like the first album from The Almost, Southern Weather, adding more of a country/bluesy feel, than their second release Monster Monster.
The strongest track, without a doubt (ironic, I know) would be “Ghost,” and possibly the album’s closer “Lonely Boy.” However, that being said, my utmost favorite song from this latest album is definitely the title track. It sort of reminds me of the song “I Mostly Copy Other People” from their first album.
All in all, this may have been The Almost’s best work yet, and possibly even the best work of Aaron Gillespie’s career. Don’t shoot me now, Underoath fans.
