Located in the Providence/Boston area, I give to you the band Collington. With an album and EP under their belt already, they’ve released their second full length album: East//West. I’ve known about Collington for a year or so now, after seeing them perform at a youth event. I was very excited for this album! I’m glad to say that it didn’t disappoint.
With a ten song track list, East//West has something to offer in multiple genres. The first few songs reminded me of The Almost’s “Dirty and Left Out,” from their debut album Southern Weather, with a soft acoustic guitar and meaningful lyrics that aren’t too complicated, but still original and memorable.
The lead singer’s vocals are crisp, but with just enough grit to lend some originality and strength to. He reminds me of Preson Phillips (another person you should look up!).
The one complaint i would have about this album would be in the song “Climb On.” A great song in itself, surely, but in the rouse of the final chorus, the timing is off between vocals and music just enough to make what could’ve been an impactful ending to the song fall flat. Of course, we can lend it to the production, but I think it’s one of the perks of having such a raw album: There are mistakes at times.
If you’re looking for a different approach to a popular, possibly-overdone genre, while still maintaining a hipster status, Collington’s East//West may be what you’re looking for. You can buy the album on Bandcamp, iTunes, and on their website: http://collingtonmusic.com/
